Update 2 Helth and Constrtuction team Nov 2011 Ethiopia

having an excellent time. The weather for the most part was very dry in Ethiopia with high altitude conditions and warm winds. In Rwanda it has also been warm but very humid with mid day rains.

This update will give you an idea of some of the things that happened during the latter part of the Ethiopia trip.

  • Building was started on our first orphan home. This was a very exciting project as Hopethiopia has been waiting for a long time to start construction. Our Ethiopian contractors had just completed the home foundation before we arrived allowing us the place interlocking bricks all around the perimeter and in the internal walls. There still needs to be quite a bit of work done to complete the walls and we are waiting for doors and windows to be fabricated. • Health care clinics. We ran two different clinics; one at a remote village location and the second at the Harbu Chulule health centre. The main focus for the health team was to take care of eye problems although we did treat many other conditions. Dr. Asrat, our Ethiopian cataract surgeon was amazing and Mahlat, the Ethiopian health officer, was also a great help . It looks like 70% of the adult population has some kind of cataract problem so there is great need. The team identified more than 40 significant cataract and Trachoma patients and we will perform the surgeries onsite at the health centre in 1 1/2 weeks.
  • High school – Fortunately Hopethiopia has been able to assist with opening up grade 11 at the localĀ  high school. Up until now the grades have only gone up to grade 10 so this is a great new beginning for Harbu Chulule and all the town and students are very excited. We had some celebrations with the students and built some closer relationships.
  • Water well project – The water project is a great success!! We had the drillers come out to our site at attach a pump to do a 24 hour testing of capacity as well as water analysis. The first drops that came out were amazing and you can see a brief video clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tifd2KLoIeg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tifd2KLoIeg
  • After we had let the water flow overnight the team showed up the next day to see local people from the community and other outlying areas collecting water in their Gerry cans. It was a great site and we were so thankful for this precious gift.
  • Official visit with President Girma – the team was invited to the Palace in Addis Ababa for a formal visit with President Girma. it was a wonderful visit with photographers and news agencies present to record the event. We also had the opportunity to take a tour of the palace grounds and see the great variety of animals and luscious gardens. This was definitely a great honor for the team.
